Fasting, Body Detox Cleansing Symptoms & Side Effects


Getting The Runs Or Diarrhea is One Symptom of Body Detox CleansingFasting Detox Cleansing can give you a magnificent boost in all areas, physical, mental and spiritual. There is a huge price for undergoing this type of discipline. The ‘barrier‘ which keeps many from going the distance, undoubtedly, are the nasty detox symptoms. I can’t call them ‘negative side effects,’ but they can indeed be quite strong and unpleasant.

For some people there are hardly any symptoms at all. For others, like me, they can be strong and quite challenging. I will be writing a lot about detox symptoms, so make sure to take the time and read these articles so that you can be prepared. The good news is that the symptoms pass, usually in nine to eleven days of water fasting and 14 to 21 days of Juice fasting.

If you are doing a shorter cleanse such as seven days or nine days with the Master Cleanse Lemonade Diet, you probably will feel the symptoms for most of the duration. It all depends on your level of toxicity. If, like me, you have eaten poorly for a long time, I advice you to expect the best but get ready for the worst.

Detox cleanse side effects are caused by the toxins in the body being released into the bloodstream as the body goes into ketosis, feeding from stored fat instead of the daily intake of food. In other words, when one stops eating for more than 48 hours (or notably reduces calorie intake), the body starts to tap into stored fat to provide the energy that it would normally receive from meals.

Stored fat ‘hides’ the very worst of the toxins that have accumulated for the food we eat, beverages we drink, as well as from the environment. When these toxins start to flow freely in the , one goes into a healing crisis of sorts. This healing or ‘curative’ process is miraculous because all of these toxins get flushed out of the body. But, as I said, the going can get rough while the detox cleansing takes place.

After going without food for eight-to-twelve hours, you can expect to start feeling intense hunger, headaches, dizziness, nausea, fever, weakness and/or diarrhea. These do not usually come all at once. The headaches, hunger and weakness usually come first. After one or two days the dizziness can become quite strong.

It may be difficult to walk around, concentrate and perform the tasks that you would normally do with ease. Don’t look at it as a negative. Realize that, even though you aren’t feeling well, you are getting better because all of that filth is getting purged out of your body.

emotional-outburstYou may feel quite sleepy and very grumpy. Mood swings are also normal. You may suddenly become very emotional, get angry or sad for no apparent reason. Hang in there. Your soul also is being purged. I believe that detox cleansing opens doors to the subconscious mind and begins to ‘detox’ our hearts, thoughts and emotions.

That is why I always suggest that one maintain a detox cleansing journal and spend time writing in it as often as possible. It is likely that you may receive some interesting insights about your life. Those are nuggets that you surely do not want to miss, so by all means keep a journal and write on it frequently.

Body aches are common, including pain in the soles of your feet, neck, lower back, chest, arms and legs. Again, the trash is being taken out. So this is all good and you will feel much, much better once the detox cleanse is completed. Of course, exercise caution and vigilance. If you notice, for example, that the chest pains are becoming quite strong and do not go away, discontinue the cleanse and see your doctor – just in case.

In most cases these symptoms are quite temporary and do not last longer than a few hours or perhaps a day at worst. Some of the detox cleanse symptoms may come, go and then return for a bit longer. That is also pretty normal. The onset of these detox cleansing symptoms is why it is best to do all of this at home when you can take time off. It is suggested that you do not go at this alone, especially if it is your first time. You may become quite weak and dizzy. In some cases, fainting happens.

You must move slowly and never get up abruptly from a sitting position. Drink lots of water; at least half a gallon daily or more. Seltzer water helps to quite hunger pangs, and decaf green tea can help to give you a pep of energy to counteract the weakness.

If you intend to do the detox cleanse while continuing to work and carry out daily activities, you will have to be very careful. Rest is the best remedy. If you are able to take a nap when you start to feel ill, so much the better. Do not be surprised if you have some strange dreams and/or even nightmares. The toxins flowing through the bloodstream can cause those as well.

If you drink a lot of coffee, then the headaches can become quite uncomfortable for around 72 hours. You don’t’ have to be a martyr. If the pain gets bad, go ahead and drink some watered-down coffee to help you get through it. The best way to minimize detox cleanse symptoms is to prepare for the process at least seven days before.

You can do this by starting to tape off the caffeine as well as reduce your intake of sugar, fat and junk food. If you can start to eat ‘light’ seven days prior to the detox cleanse, you will sidestep the worst of the symptoms. Eat more salads, vegetables, fruit and lean meats in preparation for the detox cleanse. In other words, take out the junk and allow your body to get ready for the detox.

In short, drink plenty of water and get as much rest as possible. Let the body work its way through the detox cleanse. Remain as still as possible and wait for the process to culminate. You will be very glad that you did. The dividends in health, energy and overall well being can be enormous. If you are willing to pay the price and navigate through the discomfort, the sky’s the limit. Nothing compares to the sense of peace and tranquility that comes when we are totally clean of toxins.

Juice Fast



Purists will say that the juice fast is not fasting at all. They will say that fasting requires the absence of food and that giving the body things to extract nutrients from diminishes the fasting benefits. So what is the truth? Well, keep reading?


If you have read up on juicing, you will recall that juicing is beneficial because juice contains concentrated nutrition. It takes 8 ? 12 small carrots to make a glass of juice. If you use a high quality juicer, the vitamin and mineral content of a glass of carrot juice is every bit as much as the 8-12 carrots. In fact, since the juicer breaks down the indigestible plant fiber around the juice contained in the plant cells, your body will actually be able to absorb the nutrients faster and with less effort.


Also, while food takes hours to leave your stomach and takes anywhere from 6 to 12 hours to get eliminated from you body, juice takes less than a half hour to leave your stomach and under a couple of hours to be eliminated. For this reason, juice is very easy for your body to digest.


While juice provides you essential nutrients, juice can also cause your body to cleanse itself. As with the monofood fast, grapes, watermelon, apples or carrots are ideal candidates for a juice fast because each has cleansing and healing properties.

Fasting is the most effective method known to draw out poisons and toxins from your cells throughout your entire body. People have recovered from a remarkable number of maladies by using this method of detoxification.


Why does your body cleanse itself better when fasting?


Without nourishment, shouldn?t your body get weaker, not stronger? Your body expends a tremendous amount of energy digesting and processing food. The food must be broken down to extract its vital nutrients and then be disposed of. When food is not provided to the body over some period of time, your body gets on with its job of housekeeping ? cleansing and detoxification of its . Well, then why the juice fast? Stay tuned?.


When your body is infected with a virus, if focuses its energy toward removing the invader. If your body cannot stop its growth, the organism would quickly multiply and overpower your body and kill you. This is why immune deficiency diseases are so serious. When we get sick, our bodies instinctively tell us not to eat and we lose our appetite. When you are sick, your stomach may grumble because it is empty, but you do not actually feel hungry. Your body is effectively telling you that fasting is what it wants.


When you eat a meal, the blood circulation to the digestive organs increases. The body does this to fight off in the food, to absorb nutrients and to fuel the muscles along your entire gastrointestinal tract to keep the food and waste moving along in your body. When the body is not burdened by the tasks associated with digesting and eliminating food, it focuses all the energy it would normally have given to these tasks, to pulling out and flushing toxins from the body. Therefore, fasting helps to flush out toxins.


Outside the US ? particularly in non-western cultures, fasting is part of what people do on a regular basis to stay healthy. In India, people routinely fast once a week to purify both the body and mind for religious reasons. A friend was visiting me from his home in Brazil. He was telling me that he fasts for a few days at least once per year, to allow his digestive system some rest. Such practices have found their way into the culture in other countries because over decades or even centuries, healers realized that people become and remain healthier if they fast on a regular basis.


When should you fast?


You can fast at anytime of the year. Chinese medicine suggests that fasts should be done ten days before and after the vernal equinox ? March 11 to April 1. This makes sense because it would be the most likely time that animals (or early man for that matter) would have been low on food reserves after the winter, but before spring starts to provide renewed sources of food. At that time, early man would have had to eat what little was available ? thus creating a natural fast.


I am actually more practical. Fasting decreases your body temperature. Therefore, it is most comfortable when you are in a warm place. If your house is normally cold in winter and warm in summer, then wait until summer for your fast.


Should you drink water while fasting?


Absolutely, yes! The body can go for many days without food, but in comparison, a much shorter time without water. Also, drinking plenty of water will fill your stomach, thus making fasting more comfortable. Lastly, the toxins that are extracted from your body will be flushed out, rather than re-circulated, if you are drinking plenty of water. What type of fast should you use?


There are three types of fasts: pure, monofood and the juice fasts. Remember to always continue drinking water, regardless of which type you choose to undertake. The pure fast is the simplest form, where you refraining from eating anything. If you are planning an extended pure fast (more than two days), then drink a fasting mixture instead of plain water. This will give you minimal sustenance to keep your body functioning properly, and is sometimes referred to as a .


Fasting mixture:
8 ounces of pure water
a pinch of salt
1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup
2 tablespoons of lemon or lime juice


I am a wimp when it comes to fasting. I am borderline hypoglycemic and become cranky and develop severe headaches when my blood sugar drops. Therefore, I am a big fan of the monofood fast and the juice fast. Mentally, it is easier to adjust to the idea of eating only one food or drinking juice for a few days, rather than absolutely no food. In a monofood fast, you consume only one type of fruit or vegetable, in any form (dried, whole or juiced) for the duration of the fast. Fruits, such as grapes, apples, or watermelon, are generally preferred because of the cleansing and healing properties that they contain.


From the vegetable family, carrots are preferred. By limiting yourself to one food, your total intake is greatly reduced, so your body can still redirect energy to pulling out toxins. A juice fast is a monofood fast taken to the next level. Since your intake is limited to liquid form, your body expends even less energy to digest and process the juice. Always, always, consume only natural and organic foods when on either the monofood or juice fasts.


During your fast, medications should be discontinued. Also, do not plan on much strenuous activity during your fast. Remember, your body will be conserving its energy during your fast – so you will feel like you have less energy to expend on physical activity. Additionally, your body temperature will drop and you may feel cold. I found that the first half-day of the fast is the hardest. Once my body realizes that I am not getting food, it settles down. The second day is much easier than the first ? especially on a monofood fast or a juice fast.


When you first start eating, I suggest you eat fruits and vegetables for the first couple of meals ? no meats and no fried foods. I found that I felt a burst of energy and my face felt flushed when I first consumed food after a fast. By easing into eating, it will allow your internal system to get used to solid food again before giving it hard to digest substances. If you do not, you will likely be in for a rude awakening during your first bowel movement after the fast. In order to help in the transition, you can also take a teaspoon of psyllium husk with water at the end of your fast.


How long should you fast?


The books say that fasts can last from one to 30 days. Although people have fasted longer, I personally would not recommend fasting for more than a 5 days. Also, do not be afraid to work your way up ? first start with a one-day fast. After this, you will be much more comfortable with fasting and your second fast can be 3-4 days. As your body cleanses itself, you will find that you will be able to hold a fast longer.

What’s the Easiest Method to Cleanse & Detox?


Cleansing & Detoxifying your body is essential to your overall health & well-being. Studies show we naturally absorb toxins in our daily lives through food, water and air. Basically with an herbal cleansing kit you are taking herbal pills during the day to help you cleanse. Watching what you eat takes the most discipline although it is not very difficult as you are allowed a pretty good food choice. Basically avoiding and eating natural foods is the rule.

There are two type of Herbal Cleanses -

a) Long Term Cleansing (30-60 day) – These are very effective as you are taking time to get the herbal cleansing agents to do their proper work. If you can take cleansing pills for 30-60 days, and follow a few food rules, this is an easy-to-do and great way to cleanse.

b) Short Term Cleansing (7-14 days) – These are usually called “Quick Cleanses” but are still very effective and very convenient. There are many kits that you can purchase at the Natural Foods Store & online. This can be used if you are limited on time, but still want to try out a cleanse. Have some more focus and already eat healthy? Try one of these “quick cleanses” with a food cleanse (see method 3 below)

2. Food & Juice Cleanse – This is a close runner up to the Herbal Cleansing Kit as it is fairly easy to do, in particular if you already are familiar with healthy eating. You do not have to starve with a food cleanse. The key is in what foods you eat and what foods you don’t eat. This cleanse can last usually from 14-60 days depending upon your focus and goal. This type of cleanse can be very good if you also want to lose some weight. Combining this cleanse with a partial or intermittent juice fast is also very effective.

The key to this type of Food Cleansing is -> 1) Eat Organic & Natural Foods only. 2) Avoid Foods & Drink with Refined Sugar, Refined Oil, Preservatives or Chemical Additives 3) Eat lots of Organic Veggies and Fruit – these contain most of the cleansing properties. 4) Drink lots of Water & Juice. If you need some help spend some time researching this type of diet.

3. The Great Combo – This has been my favorite as it works very well. It takes a bit more focus than just the first two methods because it combines them together to make the “great combo”.

What I typically do is -

38) Start out with a 1-2 week food cleanse (this can also be a partial juice fast if you like that method)

2) Introduce and do the Herbal Cleanse for 1-2 weeks, while continuing the food cleanse.

3) End with 1-2 weeks of a food cleanse.

Now this combo can be done in various ways. You can do a short cleanse or a longer cleanse. You could end up doing a 30 day herbal cleanse with 2 weeks of a food cleanse on both ends (60 days) or you could do 3 day food cleanse (or juice fast), then a 7 day herbal cleanse with the food cleanse, and end with another 3 days of food cleansing (13 days total). For those on a tight schedule – a 7 day cleanse is also possible combining the food/juice cleanse with a 7 day herbal cleanse.

The method and the total length is something you should decide for yourself depending upon your schedule, discipline and desire. These are very effective as you are combining two great methods.

Which is the Best Method?

Any three of these is a good choice. It depends upon what works for you -

1) Limited on time and focus? Try the herbal cleansing kits.

2) Already eat well and are familiar with natural foods? Try the food cleanse.

3) Have some more discipline? Try the Great Combo.

4) Want to know the Costs? The Herbal Cleansing kits of course cost extra money. Food Cleansing can be a bit more economical.

Using various cleansing herbs is an excellent way to enhance our basic cleansing as they stimulate the lungs, kidneys and liver and other organs, whereas just a vegetarian diet probably wouldn’t do the trick.

These three body cleansing detoxification options listed above are just a summary. You would be wise to investigate all of your options and then decide just what is the right way to detox your body.
