Something can be done about it

I have been researching and nutrition for several years. Sometimes I forget that most people are not aware that there is an entire school of healing that believes that regardless of your health, there is always something that can be done about it and naturally! For example, taught that health could be regained through the use of the Master Cleanse; VitaFlex, which shares similar principles with reflexology; and a vegetarian diet.


He has certainly not been alone in this belief. Henry Bieler, MD, practiced medicine for more than 50 years and summarized his approach in his book, Food is Your Best Medicine. Two of his most famous patients were Gloria Swanson and Great Garbo, the Paris Hilton and Madonna of his time.


Norman Walker, D.Sc. (an advanced science degree like Ph.D.) was the man who invented the therapeutic juicer to achieve his results and was internationally famous for using nutrition and cleanses. (He required colonics for his patients.) He wrote several books, including Become Younger, Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices: What’s Missing in Your Body?, and The Vegetarian Guide to Diet and Salad. His juicer, by the way, is one of only two that were approved by Max Gerson, MD, who treated cancer, tuberculosis, and other degenerative diseases by including juicing in his regimen as early as 1948!


Herbert M. Shelton, Ph.D., founder of the School of Natural Hygiene, cured tens of thousands of people using fasting and other natural means to restore health. His writings can be seen on the Internet.


Joel Fuhrman, MD, author of Eat to Live, Fasting-And Eating-For Health, and Disease-Proof Your Child: Feeding Kids Right, promotes a regimen of mostly , vegetarian diet and occasionally fasting to cure patients of diabetes, and other degenerative diseases.


The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., reveals the importance of diet in increasing or decreasing the risk of , cancer and diabetes.


The key concept here is that something can be done about your health naturally. Once you know that, it is just a matter of searching until you find a way that accomplishes that healing, but the idea that something can be done about it is what opens the door.

Microwave cooking

This information below comes from Tom Valentine, an author, and Dr. Joseph Mercola. Unfortunately, only Dr. Mercola’s website is still in existence.


According to Tom Valentine, in May of 1989 there was a radio announcement sponsored by Young Families, the Minnesota Extension Service of the University of Minnesota that said: “Although microwaves heat food quickly, they are not recommended for heating a baby’s bottle…. Heating the bottle in a microwave can cause slight changes in the milk. In infant formulas, there may be a loss of some vitamins. In expressed breast milk some protective properties may be destroyed.


“Warming a bottle by holding it under tap water or by setting it in a bowl of warm water, then testing it on your wrist before feeding, may take a few minutes longer, but it is much safer.”


Valentine goes on to report that in 1991, word leaked out about a lawsuit in Oklahoma. A woman named Norma Levitt had hip surgery, only to be killed by a simple blood transfusion when a nurse “warmed the blood for the transfusion in a microwave oven.” (Journal of Natural Science, 1998; Vol. 1 pages 2-7) Blood for transfusions is routinely warmed, but not in microwave ovens! In the case of Mrs. Levitt, the micro-waving altered the blood and it killed her.


In the Journal Pediatrics (Vol. 89, No. 4, April 1992), there appeared an article entitled “Effects of Microwave Radiation on Anti-infective Factors in Human Milk” by Richard Quan MD from Dallas, Texas and John A. Kerner MD, from Stanford. Dr. Kerner was quoted in an article summarizing that research, which appeared in the April 25, 1992 issue of Science News.


“Women who work outside the home can express and store breast milk for feedings when they are away. But parents and caregivers should be careful how they warm this milk. A new study shows that microwaving human milk — even at a low setting — can destroy some of its important disease-fighting capabilities


“Breast milk can be refrigerated safely for a few days or frozen for up to a month; however, studies have shown that heating the milk well above body temperature can break down not only its antibodies to infectious agents, but also the bacteria-digesting enzymes. So, when pediatrician John A. Kerner Jr. witnessed neonatal nurses routinely thawing or reheating breast milk with the microwave oven in their lounge, he became concerned.


“In the April journal, Pediatrics (Part I), he and his Stanford University co-workers reported finding that compared to unheated breast milk, microwaved milk lost bacteria-digesting activity, lost antibodies and encouraged the growth of more potentially disease-causing bacteria. Milk heated at a high setting lost nearly all of its antibodies, the agents that fend off invading germs.


“What really surprised him, Kerner says, was finding some loss of anti-infective properties in the milk microwaved at a low setting. Adverse changes at such low temperatures suggest ‘microwaving itself may in fact cause some injury to the milk above and beyond the heating,’ he said.”


The most significant study on microwaved food was done in Switzerland in 1992 by Dr. Hans Hertel, a Swiss food scientist. He was also a participant in the study, which included 7 others. All of whom stayed within the same hotel on the same macrobiotic diet for 8 weeks with no smoking, drinking or other consumption of food. The blood of the participants was tested before consuming anything and after consuming each type of food tested: , cooked food and microwaved food.


Food from the microwave oven caused abnormal changes, representing stress, to occur in the blood of all the test individuals. But the same foods cooked conventionally did not generate abnormal changes. Hertel pointed out that these changes were typical of the beginnings of such chronic metabolic diseases as cancer and . In particular, Hertel discovered that microwaving food:

Increased bad cholesterol levels,Decreased the numbers of red blood cells carrying oxygen,Decreased the amount of hemoglobin, the substance in the blood that carried oxygen, andProduced compounds created by radiation unknown in nature.

Hertel believes his study suggests that cholesterol may rapidly increase in the blood due to stress. He added, “Blood cholesterol levels are less influenced by the cholesterol content of food than by stress factors. Such stress-causing factors can occur in foods which contain no cholesterol — the microwaved vegetables.” In other words, eating good raw butter may not raise cholesterol levels in a healthy person as much as eating organic vegetables cooked in a microwave.


Test results were consistently on the lower range of normal in those who were tested following the eating of the microwaved samples showing anemic tendencies. The situation became even more pronounced during the second month of the study. And along with the decreasing blood values was an increase in bad cholesterol. “We can only imagine the pronounced negative changes that might occur in the bloodstreams of people who consume various microwaved foods day in and day out,” Hertel said.


This is not so surprising considering that the way microwaves heat food. Electromagnetic force is used to alternate the magnetic orientation of the water molecules one billion times per second or more. It is this furious action that causes the water to heat up. It also changes the nature of the substances involved.


In an October 1994 letter about the ill effects of microwaving food, Hertel said:


“I always marvel at people who know that microwaves are hazardous to life, but still use them. That goes for you, too. So why do you ask this question [about whether your illness was created or worsened by microwaved food]? Is it because you are still looking for arguments to continue using the microwave? [The study results on microwaved food] are hard facts, aren’t they? But I have already answered dozens of such letters from mothers using microwave ovens to heat baby food for their babies, which had already contracted leukemia, but the mothers were still not prepared to refrain from using these deadly ovens because they are so practical and convenient, as they claim.


“If you, dear friend, love your body and your life, then stop it….”

Swine Flu and the Master Cleanse

The other day I received a letter from a lady who asked me to write about the swine flu and what if anything the Master Cleanse might do. First some facts about the swine flu.


According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is a flu commonly spread among pigs in North America. It is called swine flu. It is considered normal. There is also a new flu virus that contains swine, bird and human components. This was originally called swine flu because it contained components of the normal swine flu, but it is now officially called “Novel Swine Flu (H1N1)” by the CDC.


The CDC reports that “Most people who have become ill with this new virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment.” [emphasis is mine, not the CDC's] (http://www.cdc.gov/H1N1flu/qa.htm)


The same CDC report says that about 70% of those hospitalized with this novel flu already had medical conditions that increase the risk of serious complications. “This includes pregnancy, diabetes, suppressed immune systems, , asthma and kidney disease.”


It goes on to say that there is no evidence that adults older than 64 are at any increased risk of serious complications from the novel swine flu. That means that anyone over 64 needn’t worry about the swine flu any more than the “regular” flu. However, people younger than 25 do seem to get novel swine flu more than older people.


In summary, people who already sick appear to be at greater risk than those who are healthy. (Except for pregnancy, which puts a severe nutritional strain on the mother.)


So, the question becomes what can one do to improve their overall health? Detoxify is clearly one answer. And you know that I recommend the Master Cleanse for that. It’s cheap. It’s easy for most people and it generally makes people feel great.


Fasting (Remember, the Master Cleanse is a juice fast.) was used by Hippocrates, The Father of Modern Medicine, to handle diseases involving sweats, hot or cold. He also said, “If one give to a person in fever the same food which is given to a person in good health, what is strength to the one is disease to the other.” So, it would seem that the Master Cleanse would be good for flu.

My Mailbag: diarrhea and the salt water flush

I get so many emails that it’s impossible to answer all of them individually in the time I have. However, here’s an email I received this week that is typical of many others:


I like your website, it’s been informative, thank you. This is the 2nd day of my first master cleanse. I had diarrhea this morning a couple of times, so I skipped taking the salt water flush. I was double-checking my resources because I thought that was the way I was supposed to handle the situation, but could not locate that information. Am I doing the right thing in regards to my diarrhea?


Is it actually diarrhea or is it the salt water flush? Approximately one half to one hour after drinking the salt water flush, if you’ve gotten the amount of the salt right, you’ll experience several urgent eliminations. They can be quite watery and after most of the solid waste has past, are usually bright yellow. The bright yellow is liver bile. If that’s what you’re experiencing, you’re doing it correctly and should continue. If you’re not experiencing several urgent eliminations after one half to one hour, you need to alter the amount of salt you add to the quart of water. (Start by gradually increasing it.)


If it’s actually diarrhea, then you did the right thing by discontinuing the salt water as points out on page 27 under “Recap of the steps…” and then “In the morning….”

Our sick society & the road back

Arithmetic is such a nice “clean” science. Everyone agrees that 2 + 2 = 4. No one argues that it equals 5, or 3. When you buy something at the store and use a $5 bill to pay for an item that costs $4, your change is always $1. Aerospace engineers and workers produce workable airplanes from the same plan every time. This is the mark of a known science. The exact same action produces the exact same result every time. With that in mind, let us look at cancer research.


Since 1971, when President Richard Nixon declared War on Cancer, the total amount spent on cancer research and treatment is estimated to have passed the two trillion dollar ($2,000,000,000,000) mark (Wall Street Journal, 16 Oct 2002)!


Yet global cancer rates are expected to increase 50 percent by the year 2020, according to a 351-page study from a branch of the World Health Organization. (http://www.iarc.fr/en/publications/pdfs-online/wcr/index.php)


In industrialized countries, more than one person in four currently dies from the disease, a rate more than twice as high as developing countries (countries without the benefit of our expensive laboratories). By the way, the same study reports the industrialized countries with the highest overall cancer rates are the US, Italy, Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, Canada and France.


Clearly cancer isn’t as simple as 2 = 2 = 4 or is it? A member of the Danish Institute of Health, Mikkel Hendhede, made a dramatic proposal to the Danish government during World War I. He said feeding grain to farm animals and then eating meat was wasteful. Using that system, one person can be fed. However, the same amount of grain could feed people. So, he proposed Denmark should sell most of its farm animals to Germany and turn vegetarian for the duration of World War I.


Almost the entire Danish medical establishment protested saying the proteins in grain were incomplete and there would be 1,000’s of deaths from lack of protein malnutrition.


Hendhede told of large vegetarian populations in Africa and India who seemed to do well on a meat-free diet and the Danish government acted on his advice. The Danish medical establishment were utterly in opposition to this and they spent much time and effort on the collection of statistics on deaths with special attention to death from lack of protein.


This should sound familiar to vegetarians who are frequently asked, “But what do you do for protein?” It should also be familiar to Master Cleansers who watch comments on TV from nutritionists, who have never done the Master Cleanse, saying there is not enough protein for it to be “safe.”


Surprisingly, or not, there were no deaths from lack of protein. In fact, by early 1918, the total death rate in Denmark had decreased by 17%, the major part due to fewer cancer deaths!


Once you start to look for yourself, the data is not hard to find. Albert Schweitzer reported that the natives in Gabon, Africa in 1913, were cancer free vegetarians.


In 1923, the British Medical Journal published three letters from English doctors in various parts of Africa reporting the same freedom from cancer.


In 1974, the Hopi Indians of Arizona, living on their traditional vegan diet, were reported to have only one case of cancer per 1,000 people. The white population in Arizona at this time had one case of cancer in every four people.


Near the Hopi are Pueblo Indians. The Federal Department of Indian Affairs decided to improve the diet of the Pueblo Indians by giving them food stamps providing a high meat diet similar to the rest of the population of the US. Norman Walker has said the same thing for decades. T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. has recently documented the same findings in The China Study.


Step one for our sick society is for each one of us to realize we are responsible for our own health. We can and should get advice from health care practitioners, but we are the ones who have to understand it and LOOK to see if the information works scientifically time after time. When a doctor says there is no cure, he is only saying “I don’t know of any other cure.”


Step two is to decide that good health can be yours and not to quit looking until you find a workable method for you.


This world is a very large place. It is large enough for “pockets” of true knowledge to exist unknown by the general populace. There is a great deal of valuable, workable knowledge out there. You have to decide it is your job to find it and that you will not stop looking until you do.

Aspartame

I believe has more enzymes and is healthier for you than cooked food, but that is not the most important reason to promote a diet (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds & fermented food). The most important reason is that processed foods with additives, artificial colors and flavors, and preservatives (to name just a few) are routinely being found harmful both physically and mentally. The argument for raw food is double-sided. Get all the nourishment your body needs and avoid the newly created toxins of the processed food industry.


The artificial sweetener Aspartame, is also sold as NutraSweet, Equal, Equal Measure and Spoonful. As some of you may know, the Food and Drug Administration has a system that permits people to report adverse (bad) reactions. In February of 1994, Aspartame accounted for more than 75% of all adverse reactions reported to that system!


The January, 1990, Plane and Pilot magazine featured an article on . It explained that diet are sweetened artificially by Aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal), and that Aspartame contains 10% methanol, a poison, that is released at temperatures above 86 degrees or left for a long time on the shelf. You should know that on 27 June 1996, without public notice, the FDA removed all restrictions from aspartame allowing it to be used in everything, including all heated and baked goods.


The Plane and Pilot article disclosed that methanol destroys the brain a little at a time. Immediate effects can either be severe (epileptic seizures, blindness, or chest palpitations) or less noticeable (blurred vision, bright flashes, tunnel vision, ringing or buzzing in ears, migraine headaches, dizziness, loss of equilibrium, or lip and mouth reactions).


The article reported on an Air Force pilot who traced the patterns of tremors and seizures he suffered for two years directly to his consuming NutraSweet in beverages. His tremors grew more severe and ended his flying career. His medical problems ceased when he quit ingesting NutraSweet, but it was too late to restore his flying status.


It also reported on another who suffered similar symptoms only when using Aspartame products. After only two cups of artificially sweetened hot chocolate in flight, a pilot experienced blurred vision so severe he was unable to read the instruments and very narrowly avoided a tragic landing. Safely on the ground, he related his symptoms to the secretaries in his office. Both of them told of experiencing similar symptoms after consuming Aspartame products.
